Government Grants 101

Government grant applications can be intimidating. Grants.gov isn’t exactly user friendly. You filter, search, filter some more and finally find the perfect grant. But that’s just the beginning.

To apply for a government grant you must register your organization on three sites to submit an application and that process must be followed in an exact order. There are great grant opportunities available if you follow the steps to apply.

Steps to register for a government grant

  • Register with login.gov – this must be completed first
  • Register with SAM.gov – you will receive a Unique Entity ID (UEI)*
  • Register with grants.gov*

*You will use your login.gov ID and password to register with SAM.gov and grants.gov

Helpful Hints

  • Do not wait to start this process. During times of high volume, this entire process can take a few weeks. You cannot get a grant application extension due to a delay in registration.
  • Have your organization information on hand – you will need it for the grants.gov application for the Federal Domestic Assistance/Short Organization Form.
  • Follow the instructions to access the application portal for the grant you wish to apply for.
  • You no longer need a DUNS number to register with SAM. If you have DUNS number, you will need to go through the SAM process.
  • When registering for your SAM account, you must select YES when completing the “Representations & Certifications” section. All awardees are required to have these representations & certifications in order to receive an award.
  • Your SAM registration must be current at the time a grant is made, and throughout the life of the award.
  • This process must be completed by an authorized representative of your organization. Your grant writer cannot complete these steps.
